Black-faced Antthrush, Carrara, Costa Rica

This is the only antbird/antthrush that we could get a picture of on the entire Costa Rica trip. The tropics are loaded with these shy forest dwellers who are often heard but never seen. They are not brightly colored but often have bright eye rings like this fellow. If one is lucky enough to come across an ant swarm one may see many different rare species at once. We never saw this occur since it is supposed to be one of the most amazing experiences in tropical birding. Although, in Ecuador (see Ecuador birds section) we did witness a rare spectacle where Angel Paz fed wild Antpittas in the rainforest next to his farm.
