Turquoise-browed Motmot, Guanacaste, Costa Rica

The colorful Turquoise-browed Motmot has striking long tail feathers with featherless shafts. It is considered one of the most beautiful birds of Costa Rica. They rival the Quetzals in their glorious colors, and can be found from the dry forests of Guanacaste northward to southern Mexico. Motmots are often easily heard but difficult to see since most types inhabit dense jungles. However, the Turquoise-browed motmot is found in the dry forests making them easier to see. We were lucky to see this fellow perched on a branch just to the side of the road on the way to Monteverde.
