The Scarlet Tanager is a beautiful neotropical migrant that is fairly common in the summers in the East Coast. It often stays near the tree tops but may come down lower during migration as was the case here. They time their arrival as the flowers start to bloom making for beautiful scenes (Click). Even from a distance they are amazing to see: (Click). At Lafitte's Cove in Texas, you can get many good looks at these tanagers since they are tired after crossing the gulf and are willing to come down low and are rather sluggish (Click). During migration they all come down to feed on fruit like this mulberry tree: (Click) (Click).
