Dusky Grouse, Pajarito Ski Area, Los Alamos, New Mexico

,

In the Jemez Mountain, the Dusky Grouse puts on his amazing display every spring (April/May). Even though they are quite big at 19 inches, they are well camoflaged. When not displaying they are very shy so one often sees them by accidentally flushing them. Getting these pictures required hiking to the top of Pajarito Ski Hill. I heard the grouse calling and displaying from within the forest where I couldn't get a photo. I then got lucky as the grouse decided to move out to a clearing and displayed on this well lit stump making for a great scene:   (Click)   (Click). When not displaying one would never imagine the male has these beautiful colors or the fanned out tail   (Click).
