We saw this beautiful toucanet from the Amazonia lodge canopy tower calling to his mate. He was bobbing up and down in a comical fashion showing off his beautiful colors. According to our guide Virgilio, this fellow is often hidden in the leaves so getting such a good look made the long climb up to the tower with the tripod and 500 mm lens worthwhilie. This was the first morning at the lodge and it was quite eventful. First, the flash fell of the camera from the top of the canopy tower and fell a 100 ft below into the dense jungle. A flash is critical for photography in the rainforest and I was very distressed. After searching for an hour we couldn't find it. Only after recreating where the flash may have fell by throwing a stick off the top of the tower did I finally find where it landed. It was in perfect working condition since it must have hit so many leaves on the way down and it landed on the soft floor of the forest. After that fiasco we went back up to the tower and this beautiful fellow showed up. After this shakey start the rest of the trip went smoothly and so many amazing things were seen! This canopy tower has seen many famous visitors. Virgilio got an amazing shot of a Harpy eagle from this spot!
