Paradise Tanager, Cock of the Rock Lodge, Peru

Usually any bird this gorgeous is rare and difficult to see. This is not the case for the Paradise Tanager. In the cloud forest and mid-elevations of Amazonia, this fellow is one of the most common tanagers. However, they often forage high in the canopy and one doesn't get a great look like this. Luckily, there was a fruiting tree right next to the lodge where mixed flocks would come through. In this pictures you can see a hint of red to add to the already amazing pallete of colors on this tanager as he eats the ripe berries. In the next shot you can see when he lifts his wings, there is even more red to add ot the mix:   (Click).
