Gambel's Quail, Bosque del Apache, New Mexico

 

Beautiful Gambel's Quail are common in the Southwestern desert among cactus and mesquite. In June you can see pairs with their chicks marching along in a line:   (Click)   (Hi-Res). The colorful male acts as a lookout and can be seen warning the rest of his family:   (Click).
