Mascoitania Macaw Lick, Peru

I had always wanted to see one of the spectacular Macaw licks and my wife Gowri made it a reality by gifting me a trip to Peru for my 40th birthday. This particular lick attracts Chestnut-fronted Macaws, rare endagered Blue-headed Macaws, Blue-headed parrots and many other parrot species. The lick is most active in August and September so my September trip was perfect for viewing. The birds visit the lick early in the morning to eat minerals from the clay. Then they fly off and one would never guess this dirt is such a popular place. Here is a high resolution shot of the lick:   (Click). This particular lick does not attract the bigger macaws such as Red and Green, Scarlet or Blue and Yellow. For this one would have to either travel another 6 hours by boat to the Manu Wildlife Center or fly to Tambopata. Someday we hope to make this trip.
