This fellow not only has a superlong tail but an amazing wispy crest to go along with it. He is rare and we were lucky to see him at the Cock of the Rock lodge. In fact, professional hummingbird photographer Glenn Bartley, who we ran into at Amazonia lodge, told us that the Wire-crested Thorntail was hanging around the Verbena bushes right outside the dining area of the lodge. Right as we arrived, he was there and I got this shot. It turned out the first look we got was also the best look. We also got him in flight which was a sight to to see: (Click). Due to his long tail, it looked like he took every opportunity to sit down and take a drink to save energy: (Click). This last shot was taken with flash giving a different look to his colors. It was also misting in the cloud forest and you can see the droplets on the flowers.
