The Lesser-Prairie Chickens put on quite a show in April as they collect on a lek puffing out their plum colored sacs. We saw 12-14 males displaying. We never saw a female but apparently they are watching from the deep undergrowth next to the lek. This picture shows how the male completely transforms when "booming" on the lek. He stomps on the ground and kicks up some dust as can be seen here while inflating his sacs. The other male in the background shows that they look quite plain when they are not performing.
