Both the Fairmont Mara lodge and Ashnil Mara lodge were located on the Mara river where we could see large groups of hippos right from our room! We got to witness lots of interesting behavior including baby playfighting.
They often look super cute but hippos are very dangerous and even lions cannot hunt the adults. Their fat is 3 inches think and cannot be penetrated. They are also much faster than one would think and are much faster than human beings.
This was the view from our room at the Fairmot Mara lodge. Once a crocodile even came by and chased the hippos from the bank. The mother hippos soon chased the croc away!
